What We Found Out
Customers residing within AT&T’s fiber optic network have high speed internet available to them. Known as their U-verse plan, AT&T customers within this network receive wireless internet and strong firewall protection in addition to high internet speeds. Customers who do not have access to U-verse’s fiber optic internet service can still purchase DSL or dial-up internet services which are readily available in many areas since AT&T has phone lines stretching for countless miles across the country.
In addition to internet, AT&T customers can also purchase mobile phone services, telephone services, and digital TV. Mobile phone services are widely available across the country, but the company’s other services are limited to 21 states including California, Texas, Kentucky, Georgia, and Wisconsin. Wired internet services are also widely available including in rural areas. However, the company does not offer many dial-up access numbers.
Connection speeds vary even within the same states due to a number of factors such as cable infrastructure within a local region and varying weather conditions. For a monthly fee, customers can choose a DSL package with a download speed that ranges from 768 Kbps to 6 Mpbs. Third-party test results showed average speeds of approximately 1.7 to 2.1 Mbps, the approximate speeds that AT&T reports for its DSL plans. AT&T also reports that U-verse offers customers speeds up to 45 Mbps because of the fiber optic technology these plans utilize. Higher speeds such as those offered by U-verse are needed for performing online tasks such as streaming movies and downloading large files because these tasks require a greater amount of bandwidth.
Not all of AT&T’s services and internet packages are offered in all regions within the company’s network. However, wired internet services are much more widely available, so millions of customers have access to AT&T’s DSL and dial-up services.
